One region, covered properly

There is a version of local news that consists of rewriting announcements and photographing ribbon cuttings. It is cheap to produce and nobody reads it twice. The alternative is to attend the meetings, follow the works schedule, and check what happened to the plan announced two years ago. That is slower, and it is the only reason anyone opens a regional site rather than a national one. The advertising follows from the readership, and the readership follows from doing the reporting nobody else is doing.

Why we keep review coverage separate from sales

Restaurants ask, reasonably, whether advertising buys a good review. It does not, and saying so plainly is better for both sides. A section where every review is positive is worth nothing to readers and therefore worth nothing to advertisers. What a booking buys is placement next to reviews people trust, and the value of that placement depends entirely on the reviews staying honest, including about businesses that spend money with us.
